When conducting business in today’s fast-moving environment, gathering, preserving, maintaining, storing and utilizing data is an invaluable force, and we often assist our customers in doing so.

Since we acknowledge the great value of your existing data, we have made this a field of expertise, and we assist a lot of customers in preserving and moving data into SERTICA.

Transferring existing data to a new system can be a lot of work. However, converting existing data enables you to have a ready-to-use fleet management system from day one. Therefore, this step in the start-up of using or converting to a new system is very important and should not be neglected.

Our highly experienced consultants working with data migration have assisted in migrating data from Microsoft SQL databases, Oracle, Sybase and Excel, but also from other asset management systems.

Data Conversion

In case you add new vessels to your fleet, we offer to do data conversion of the existing fleet management system installed.

Based on a copy of the existing database, we can give a cost estimate based on our internal analysis. The result of analysis provides fixed fees for data conversions and depends on the amount of vessel databases, content and format.

We normally offer a test conversion for your approval and validation. The first vessel normally takes longer as we need to agree on format, method and structure. We have several data conversions tools available to ensure an easy and fast migration.

We recommend that you allocate proper qualified people internally to assist with data integration, migration and data conversion projects. These projects require that various departments are aligned to the same project strategy, and all can sign positively off to the same agreed project plan and time schedule.

To avoid possible conflicts, we also recommend that a dedicated person from your organization acts as primary contact person. This person will also act as internal project manager with the proper mandate to make decisions.

The most common process is:

  • Customer delivers data to be converted.
  • An agreement is made as to which data should be converted.
  • An initial conversion is done and delivered to the customer test environment.
  • The customer validates the data. If errors are found, a new conversion is made. This step can be repeated as many times as necessary.
  • The customer accepts the conversion.
  • Conversion is run on up-to-date data and put into live environment.

When converting data, you might as well take the opportunity to clean data. This process can vary from case to case. It can be as simple as removing data over a certain age, but it can also involve more complex scenarios as harmonizing item, component and maintenance data across a fleet.

It makes sense to clean the data to avoid bad and poor data quality on-board the vessels. It may slow down the data conversion time and arises many additional questions, but in our experience, it is worth the time in the long run.

If the shore office still wants to be able to centrally monitor and control the vessels (e.g. parts catalogues, supplier/vendor information, accounts etc.), they need good data.

As part of normal project management, we assist with the continuous control of data consistency.
